Baby Yeast Infection

baby yeast infectionBaby yeast infection, also called baby thrush is a type of candida that attacks small babies that are 2 months old or less. In rare cases it can affects older infants as well, however that is not so common place. While the baby yeast infection is rather harmless to your kid, of course any mother will worry endlessly due to the symptoms that cause your toddler yeast infection.

Physically speaking the baby yeast infection doesn't come with many symptoms such as in adults. However you will notice that your baby will act and behave differently than usual. He will be more moody, angry and restless particularly during feeding. He will be more likely to spit out his baby pacifier. A doctor will show you the physical symptoms that are not easily visible otherwise: a white or gray lacy cheese like patches on the tongue.

We all know that in smaller amounts yeast is present in our bodies, including that of toddlers and infants. The problems occur when the concentration is more than is permissible, when the candida multiplies itself too fast, producing what is called Candidiasis. A baby's immune system is quite weak still so babies are attacked by yeast much faster than a man or a woman would be. Some of the main triggering factors that allow baby yeast infection to manifest itself are:

  • When taking antibiotics, as they usually aid in candida overgrowth in the body, helping yeast spread rapidly.
  • When the mother that is breastfeeding is also infected by Candida
  • During birth, when the mom is infected, she can easily transmit it to her baby through the birth canal
  • When the pacifier used is dirty
  • When the weather is rather humid or warm

While early on there is really not much to worry about when your baby or infant has yeast infection, the main problem is due to some of the side effects that are showing such as malnutrition and dehydration, including pain when swallowing and later on diaper rash. As the infection spreads and Candida grows even more, some babies experience various complications that will need immediate treatment by a doctor.

However before getting to that point, one of the best ways to treat baby yeast infection is to actually prevent it. There are many things a mom can do to avoid the infant getting an overgrowth of Candida and here are just some that are easily done at home:

  • Sterilize the pacifier before letting the baby use it
  • Rinse and dry the nipple before the baby is fed
  • Avoid letting the baby have any refined carbohydrates in their diet, or even gluten grains
  • As the baby grows older it will start to eat more things. However you need to avoid giving him or her red meat, canned and preserved food and diary products and egg whites.

Just by using these prevention steps you will help your baby from having an overgrowth of yeast in their body and will avoid any complications that could arise through it.
